The Top 10 Worst Foods and Brands Linked to Cancer and ADHD in Kids
As a parent, I’ve made it a priority to understand how the food choices I make for my children can affect their long-term health. Many items on today’s store shelves are filled with harmful chemicals and additives that contribute to serious health issues like cancer and ADHD. I recently shared this information with a group of student athletes, and it was eye-opening for them! We explored the top 10 worst foods and brands, and I explained how their ingredients can negatively impact both performance and overall well-being. I thought it would be helpful to share this with you too…
Processed Meats (Hot Dogs, Bacon, Sausages and Chicken Nuggets)
Processed meats contain nitrates and nitrites, chemicals that are used as preservatives. When consumed, they can form carcinogenic compounds, increasing the risk of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer. Studies have also linked these meats to hyperactivity in children, which can exacerbate ADHD symptoms.
Sugary Cereals (Brands: Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops)
Sugary cereals are loaded with artificial colors and high amounts of sugar. Artificial colors like Red 40 and Yellow 5 have been linked to hyperactivity and attention issues in kids. Excess sugar can also spike blood glucose levels, which impacts mood and focus, worsening symptoms in children with ADHD.
Soda and Sugary Drinks (Brands: Coca-Cola, Mountain Dew)
Sodas are filled with high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners like aspartame, both of which are linked to cancer. Aspartame, in particular, has been scrutinized for its potential to cause brain damage and neurodevelopmental issues, contributing to hyperactivity and concentration difficulties.
Packaged Snack Cakes (Brands: Hostess, Little Debbie)
These snacks contain partially hydrogenated oils (trans fats), artificial flavors, and preservatives like BHA and BHT. Trans fats are known to raise LDL cholesterol and increase the risk of cancer, while BHA and BHT are potential carcinogens. The high sugar content can also trigger erratic energy levels in children.
Fast Food (Brands: McDonald's, Burger King)
Fast food items are rich in saturated fats, additives, and preservatives, such as MSG (monosodium glutamate), which has been shown to overstimulate the brain, affecting behavior and focus. Fast food meals can also cause insulin resistance, which has been linked to various cancers and metabolic disorders.
Artificial Fruit Snacks (Brands: Welch's, Fruit Roll-Ups)
Marketed as healthy alternatives, these snacks often contain artificial dyes and high levels of sugar. These ingredients have been associated with increased hyperactivity in children. Some studies suggest that prolonged exposure to artificial dyes may even increase the risk of developing certain cancers.
Microwave Popcorn (Brands: Orville Redenbacher, Pop Secret)
Many microwave popcorn brands use perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in the lining of their bags. PFCs have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly liver and kidney cancer. The artificial butter flavoring in these products often contains diacetyl, a chemical tied to lung damage and possibly ADHD.
Flavored Chips (Brands: Doritos, Cheetos)
Flavored chips are infamous for their use of artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives like TBHQ (tertiary butylhydroquinone), a chemical used to extend shelf life. TBHQ is considered a potential carcinogen and has been linked to worsening hyperactivity and focus issues in children with ADHD. Additionally, these brands have also been reported to carry parasites, raising further health concerns.
Prepackaged Noodles (Brands: Maruchan, Cup Noodles)
Instant noodles are loaded with sodium, monosodium glutamate (MSG), and preservatives like propylene glycol, all of which are linked to various health risks. High sodium intake and MSG can contribute to the development of cancer, with MSG specifically linked to overstimulation of the brain, worsening symptoms in children with ADHD. There have also been reports of parasites found in these products, making them even more harmful to consume.
Canned Foods (Brands: Campbell's, Chef Boyardee)
Canned goods, particularly those with acidic contents like tomatoes, often contain BPA (Bisphenol A) in their linings. BPA is an endocrine disruptor linked to several types of cancer and developmental issues, including ADHD in children.
How to Avoid These Foods
Choose whole, organic options whenever possible to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.
Cook at home to control ingredients and avoid processed foods.
Read labels carefully, avoiding products with artificial colors, preservatives, and high sugar content.
Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your child's diet to improve overall health and behavior.
By staying informed about the risks associated with harmful foods and brands, we can make more conscious choices that protect our children’s health and reduce the risk of conditions like cancer and ADHD. One of my go-to resources for checking the safety and risks of food ingredients is EWG.org, which offers in-depth analysis and guidance on making healthier choices.
Until next week, stay healthy and informed!
